The 'Hemlock' graphic depicts a scene from 'The Death of Socrates.' The painting portrays Socrates after he is accused of mocking the gods through his practice of philosophical inquiry. He is placed on trial, found guilty, and sentenced to death. Rather than escape or renounce his philosophical truths, Socrates calmly chooses to drink a goblet of poison hemlock and dies. He uses the moments before his death as a final lesson about the virtue of truth to his students.
